Just tell the fucking world you exist – that’s a start

“A human being’s made of more than air
With all that bulk, you’re bound to see him there
Unless that human bein’ next to you
Is unimpressive, undistinguished
You know who… Cellophane. Mister Cellophane”
From the musical Chicago

Let the world know you breathe, live, createI meet many artists who are so modest about their work that they are almost afraid to tell the world they exist. It’s as if they’re “Mr. Cellophane.”

I know arts presenters who appear to almost go out of their way to NOT market their programs and events.

I see arts organizations with staff who are never seen or heard, even to their members.

And then, these same artists and organizations wonder why they are undistinguished and, if they are ever slightly glimpsed, appear unimpressive.

“Nobody appreciates what I do?” “Nobody wants to pay for the art I create.” “Nobody wants to fund our projects.” And on and on and on.

Guess what? There’s a solution:

TELL THE FUCKING WORLD YOU EXIST

Even if you just try one of the following, you’ll be on your way to accomplishing a profile that makes you more than just Mr. or Ms. Cellophane:

  • Write a blog (use WordPress) about you or your organization and share, really share, what you think about and do. Tell us who you are.
  • Record a video on YouTube of you at work, in your studio, in your office, at your rehearsal. Here’s one by visual artist Michael Markowsky that rocks.
  • Post images of your work on Flickr from your creation process or from your events. Theatre and dance company Sun.Ergos does this really well.
  • Use Facebook or Twitter to let people in on what you’re doing. Photographer Kris Krug does this regularly.

Just start doing something to make yourself more visible to let the world know you breathe, live and create.

Thanks Susan, I feel like we (in the arts) tend to sit on things too much, afraid to “offend” anyone by being bold and forthright with our message or our art.

The Internet now has so many ways to push out and scream you exist.

Great advice and wholly appropriate for me as an entrepreneur and artist. Thank you, I needed it and I’m sure many others will benefit, too!

Glad you liked it, Cheryl. I’ve spent years in the arts world as a musician and singer/songwriter and then in other facets of that area and it’s so often the case that we don’t promote ourselves. We need to go that last mile.

That’s great. I’m hoping we’ll all learn from each other so what you add is really helpful.

          Welcome.

John… I must have missed this post. Don’t know how with the controversial F word right up there in the headline… anyway… moving right along [grin]

You’re right of course. We have to shout out loud. Even if shouting out loud has consequences. I learned this by shouting out loud [grin] Some people like it. Some people hate it [and you]. And yes… some people even unsubscribe.

We artists are sensitive folk who don’t enjoy getting our feathers ruffled and I guess that’s why we don’t want to stick our neck out on the block.

But I get your meaning and I couldn’t agree more. We have to be that chicken and get out there. We have to get our feathers ruffled… stick our neck out… and pray like hell there’s an afterlife! Right? Tell me that it’s true! Oh please? (((chuckles)))

Love this topic. Thanks John. We need more of that “go gettum Tiger stuff”… even if we are just acting like a great big chicken LOL

Jean, it sure seems our need to please is what keeps us so quiet and afraid to offend.

My experience is that when I’ve just got riled up enough and said “F-it” that I’ve done my best work.

Glad you liked this post, Janice. It lost me one subscriber and made one arts organization very nervous about hiring me to speak.

Thanks for all your links. Such shameless promotion. :-) Yay.
